Shailesh Rajpal—The On-Demand Economy

Written by

Humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in a tiered sequence- in order to move to another level of needs, the more basic needs must be satisfied. This concept is best illustrated as pyramid detailing foundation/biological needs, moving up towards more psychological and social needs.

We are now living in a mobile on-demand economy where goods, services, and communication can be delivered wherever and whenever with a touch of a button. While these technological advancements feel almost magical in their capabilities, our needs, have remained unchanged. There is no telling how far technology exploration will take us, and what will come to expect as the new normal. What can we tell, is that the on-demand mobile economy that has been a direct response to meeting our needs more conveniently, and society will continue to welcome forward progress? With mobile on-demand technology, barriers have been broken down like never before, creating a more accessible world for all- all in one place.

Looking at this Mr. Shailesh Rajpal defined needs- Physiological, Safety, Esteem, and Self-Actualization- we can see how integrated mobility has become in today’s world on our collective paths to self-actualization.

PHYSIOLOGICAL

(Air, Water, Food, Shelter, Sleep, Clothing)

Physiological needs are our basic human instincts, our biological survival requirements. The earliest technologies were developed to hunt/gather/cook food, build shelter, and make clothing, and we have been developing technology around these physical needs ever since. With on-demand mobility, we have created more choices for our physiological needs and lessened other constraints, such as time and transportation. With a few taps, we can have meals delivered, clothes purchased, and secure places to live.

SAFETY

(Personal security, Employment, Resources, Health)

One of the first things we learn as children is to dial 112 in case of an emergency. In an unpredictable, sometimes dangerous, world, it has always been reassuring that we are tethered to safety with a quick phone call.

As we have become mobile, we are not only able to reach out to emergency assistance in any situation but also connect to everything and anything familiar.

ESTEEM

(Respect, Self-Esteem, Status, Recognition, Strength, Freedom)

Dignity and self-worth is crucial to our overall health, like needing connection to others, we need respect for who we are as humans. We all have journeys and unique experiences and deserve to be recognized for what we contribute to the world. The freedom to make choices about our lives has an effect on our self-esteem and a lack of freedom in habits our growth. Through on-demand mobility we create personal brands and curate to how we present ourselves over social media.

With mobile on-demand technology, business is adjusting to a more available, flexible and boundless landscape. With mobility on rise, businesses and clients are improving their relationships, having a more efficient and reliable tool for collaboration.

SELF ACTUALIZATION

Mr. Rajpal placed self-actualization at the top of his need hierarchy, the idea being that very human is striving to be the best they can be and get the most out of life. To be self-actualized, according to the hierarchy model, all other needs must be met.

Our human needs have not changed yet. The only thing that will change is that how easily we can meet our need with the technology we continue to innovate.
