Living With an Alcoholic – How to Not Be an Enabler

Written by

When someone is able to help another person and has succeeded in doing so, it makes that person feel good about themselves that they were able to help someone in need. There comes a time when you think are helping someone, but in reality, you are only hurting them. What I am referring to is helping a person with an addiction. We have the best drug rehabilitation centre in Mumbai.

People with an alcohol addiction must be able to help themselves before someone else can help them. They need to want to be clean and sober. Once they have made their mind up that they do want a life of sobriety is when they should ask for outside help.

Through my experiences with alcohol addiction, people would talk to me about it and I would just listen, but I did not let any of what they said sink in. I really didn’t care at all about what they said. I listened just to be polite to them.

An alcoholic must truly want to surrender to their addiction before anything will change in their life. It may take a long time for that to happen if it happens at all. Without determination, willingness, or desire to become sober, the alcoholic will have possibly a very lonely life ahead of them if they are not willing to change.

Living with an alcoholic you cannot be an enabler at all. You cannot support them in any way, shape, or form. They must figure out just how they will survive without the help of others. Families, spouses, and friends tend to feel sorry for the addicted person, so they may lend or give money to them for their next bottle or six-pack of beer. The alcoholic lies, make up excuses and tries anything to convince someone that this will be the last time I ask for money or any favors at all.

Allowing them to stay in the household after many long talks, with no success of them quitting drinking, also does not help them. They must make it on their own. When we allow them to just hang around doing nothing but drink alcohol, they just figure they are on the easy street and it’s okay by us of how they are living. Saying nothing to them makes the alcoholic think we are giving permission for their actions.

We must put our foot down making sure that the alcoholic knows what the consequences will be if they do not quit drinking and get the help they need. The problem with saying such a thing to the alcoholic makes us feel very bad and certainly if the person is our spouse or child. They must know you mean business and are serious about where they stand in your life. You can contact us through our website, we have the best rehabilitation centre in India.
