Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic Depression is a serious mental health condition which causes extreme mood swings including emotional highs and lows such as hypomania and depression. When an individual becomes depressed, they may feel hopeless or sad and eventually lose interest in participating in most pleasuring activities. However, at the very next moment, as their mood shifts to being maniac or in the hypomania phase, they may feel full of energy, quite irritating and give you a vibe of being euphoric. These mood swings can affect their activities, sleeping schedules, energy level, behaviour and the clear ability to think.

Although the Bipolar Disorder problem is a lifelong condition, one can still manage these mood swings and other symptoms by following the particular treatment plan including medication and psychological counselling mostly, also known as Psychotherapy.

Now, the bipolar mood disorder and the alcohol use disorder also known as alcoholism can be witnessed together inside a human mind. Although the association between both the disordered is not clearly understood but it may play the following mentioned factors:

  • Coming from inherited traits that are the genetic differences sometimes affect the brain chemistry linking it with bipolar disorder. These are the only and same traits which at times also affect the way the brain mainly responds when drinking alcohol and other types of drugs as well which can increase the risk of alcohol use disorder in the body and mind of a Bipolar individual.
  • Depression & anxiety: Many Bipolar moods hold two mood types whether being really active or going into the phase of depression. Thus in that mood types some may drink to ease depression or anxiety as well, when drinking may seem to help however, in the long run it just makes the case worse. It can also lead to more than drinking a vicious cycle which is then difficult to overcome.
  • Mania is another upswing from depression which is usually characterized by an intense or euphoric mood which is hyperactive in nature and commonly leads to bad judgment and lowered inhibitions leading to the increase of consumption of alcohol and sometimes drugs too.

Bipolar disorder and alcohol use disorder or any other types of substance abuse are termed as a dangerous combination. Each does worsen the symptoms and severity of the other. Having both these above mentioned conditions increases the risk of mood swings, depression, violence and even leading towards suicide. Someone who has both bipolar disorder and alcohol use disorder or any other addiction should go for a dual diagnosis. Treatment is a necessity for them and mainly talking with the expertise of mental health professionals who specialize in the treatment of both disorders is indeed important.
