Drug Peddling Via Sea Port

Written by

The Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Mumbai and the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in India took under consideration the matter of drug peddling via sea ports in specific. As Mumbai has the Arabian sea attached directly to the city, it is a perfect location for many national and international drug peddlers to put up the containers and transport them. Emerging as one of the big threats to the narco-terrorism department, such containers carry massive amount of drugs into the cities, which is then distripbuted across the country, giving the port authorities a massive profit in the past years.

Since 2020, the intelligence agencies have now been dealing with the issues of drug transportation via sea port which has stood to become a massive security issue for the virtual borders and guards located at the coast. With the occurrence of the pandemic, as the staff had to be cut down, such incidents took place in massive amounts. According to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Mumbai, large consignments have stood to be a bigger benefit for the authorities as they either come via air, land or water ways with a certain amount of quantity holding a majority of kilogram units. Therefore, these drug peddlers have now started using the measures of sending such consignments in stored vessels via which they can get clearance and can receive money for each consignment, which is also reasonable for the peddler.

However, air routes are not preferred as without the inspection check, charge concealments cannot be transferred, and the same stands to be the reason for road transport, as toll booths stand to be an issue for the peddlers. But, water transportation gives an edge to the dealer and a chance to get thousands of crores of rupees in one goes. Few days back large containers worth Rupees 20,000 crore were seized at the Mundra port, where 2 Afghan nationals were held and the matter was sincerely investigated. This gave a major breakthrough in the narco department, helping the officials to understand that specific trading companies also provide tip offs to such peddlers. But this is not the 1st time, the DRI has seized such a hefty amount of illegal drugs which has a value of crores. Four months ago, the Mumbai port seized a consignment with Rs 2000 crore, where almost 300 Kgs of drugs were taken encounter, which had the most expensive drug in the world i.e. Cocaine. In July 2020, Heroin was also seized from the Mumbai port where a total 425 Kgs were taken by the authorities, as the ship was coming from Afghanistan. Be it the port of Mumbai or Chennai, as Sri Lanka remains on the border, however, the cases of drug use in India have been on the move as the transportation and import is done mainly via the sea ports, which is a point of concern.
