Rishikesh Trip

Rishikesh, I have been to this small town on the foothills
of garhwal himalayas several over the past 4 years and every time i discover a
lot more about this magical place and a little bit about me.

A trip to rishikesh has something for everyone. It is known
as the YOGA capital of INDIA,
the town is full of ashrams which house many yoga gurus of  the country. As the evening approaches the
air is filled with spirituality and chants of shlokas.

Getting It Right With Kathy Bowes

Recently I had the privilege of interviewing Katy Bowes. Kathy is the founder of a program to help people stop overeating and to live better lives.

KM: There are so many dieting programs out there, what makes yours different?

KB: There are a gazillion “dieting” programs out there—aren’t there? It’s amazing.

And I’m saddened by those that are not really helping their clients. Many even set them up for failure.

Last week I was talking with one of the participants in my newest class—who has been really struggling to stay on a very popular diet program that supplies refined foods to their clients. This beautiful woman is binging, periodically, and feeling awful about her inability to stay on it.

The Wrong Way To Enter A Zen Monastery! (part 1)

The spiritual life sometimes begins with unlikely candidates, in unlikely situations! Not long after Janet and I made our dash out west in 1978, the bill collectors got serious about my wild spending. They repossessed my car, harassed me at the furniture store where I was working, and made my life as miserable as only they know how.

It ended up being a battle of wits, with me stubbornly determined not to pay them a damn nickel, and soon I was looking for a place to disappear for a few years. I also had to find some answers. My shallow Catholic background, steeped in useless “mystery, miracles, and authority” where I was never exposed to Catholicism’s deeper aspects, such as the contemplative saints, was failing me.

The Natural Consequences Of Being Separate From Spirit

When you believe yourself to be separate from the spiritual aspect of your being you also separate yourself from the infinite power that your spirit possesses. You trust that your spirit is capable of knowing and doing the “right thing” at all times but you are separate from this knowledge and therefore you are not trustworthy like your spirit is.

So here you are, you have determined yourself to be untrustworthy and you actually believe that about yourself. You can’t even trust in your untrustworthiness, because it’s coming from something that is untrustworthy to begin with! Therefore, everything that you think or act upon comes from this untrustworthy source, you.

Freedom

When someone threatens our freedom, our inclination is to fight back - and fight back hard. No religion suggests that we stand idly by and allow others, either human or the forces of nature, to dominate us. The Buddha said, “I do not teach a surrender of anything to those powers that are evil, be they men or gods or the elements of nature.”

If our inherent freedom to live our lives freely, or practice our religion as we choose is threatened in any way, we dig our heels in and either openly or surreptitiously find ways to free ourselves from any yoke of oppression. This natural inclination is our human nature.
