Pardon Me While I Repent

People love it when preachers get in trouble. Newspapers and TV newscasters always like to play it up when some well-known preacher runs off with his secretary or the church offering.

Well — I haven’t done either one of those things, but I still need to repent anyway. What I have done is worse.

After 25 years and more of pastoring up here in the Klamath–Trinity region of northern California, I got caught not doing something, and now I have to own up to it.

Some Ways In Which The Bible Is Liberal

The Bible is liberal. That’s a statement that would make most any modern political commentator cringe. I will show you that if the Bible’s laws were implemented in today’s society some modern laws (certainly not all) would actually have to be liberalized to conform to the Bible.

Secular people claim that the Bible is an ancient book that spoke only to an ancient society.

On the contrary however, scholars of all faiths will have to admit that the Bible had a great deal to do with the shaping of modern societal values. Everything from the sanctity of life to the value of the individual was revealed in the Bible first and foremost.

Foundational Characteristics Of Missional Leaders

One of my favorite leadership books is “Be, Know, Do: Leadership the Army Way” by Frances Hesselbein and General Eric K. Shinski (USA Ret.) This book takes a close look at the official Army Leadership Manual and applies its principles to the corporate and civic leadership realms. Here is the Army’s definition of leadership, “Leadership is influencing people, by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization”. (pg 5) This definition has three words that stand out to me: influencing, operating and improving. Influencing: motivating and loving others in the mission for the mission. Operating: creating plans, developing systems and managing their execution so that the mission is achieved. Improving: adding value to those around you and to the organization for the betterment of the mission.
