Outsourcing Worry
Talk about a brilliant idea! From Tim Ferriss’ “4 Hour Work Week” is a genius way to release stress and worry from everyday life. This is different from every other release technique practiced, including Sedona Method, Byron Katie’s Inquiry, EFT, etc.
The book tells the story of AJ Jacobs, editor of Esquire, who humorously relates his rewarding experience of working with his first international virtual assistant. AJ finds his overseas assistant to be exceedingly effective and quickly enjoys outsourcing projects to her. First it’s simple research for articles he’s writing, then sending emails to discourage annoying solicitors, tracking down gifts for his son, and eventually he asks her to intervene on a marital dispute.
That turns out so well that he attempts to delegate his therapy, which his shrink doesn’t go for> But he does succeed in turning over his “worry” to his lovely assistant. He tells her he’s been tearing his hear out over a business deal that’s taking too long to close, and asks if she’s interested in tearing her hair out in his stead. She promises, “I will worry about this every day. Do not worry.”
Brilliant delegation!! AJ reports that every time he starts to ruminate over the deal, he reminds himself that his VA is already on the job, and he relaxes.
What a clever way to release worry for those who have trouble releasing the habit, or believe that worrying helps. Put someone else on it! In my past I discovered when I was upset about something, I would instantly feel better as soon as someone else was concerned as me. I used to think it was because misery loves company, but now I think I just enjoyed passing my burden on to someone else.
Not the healthiest approach, for sure, but as we live, we learn. Surely this outsourcing technique could be the beginning of a much more effective personal approach to releasing tension and anxiety, as we learn to create new habits of remembering to let go.
The trick to all this is that as you relax, you make way for a solution to appear. Beautiful how life works that way!
