Is It Information That People Really Go Online To Search For?
The undeniable fact that the internet is the information superhighway has given rise to the spiral growth of information merchants online. Every where you turn, you’re bombarded by those who wants to sell you on why you should join the band wagon with the much repeated catch word, “Information Sells, Therefore Sell Information.”
This has led to the most despicable of hypes on the net. It is not surprising that someone, rightly, once said that the internet is the information super hype way!
So the question begs an answer, “Do people really go online to seek for information?” To really answer this question one need to know what information means.
Information simply put is data that have been interpreted and understood by the recipient of any message given. In other words, it is knowledge given. The hard truth is that for any information to be classified as information it must be relevant. No information is of any use if it is not relevant. And for information to be relevant it must meet the following criteria:
1. Must increase knowledge
2. Must reduce uncertainty or ambiguity; and
3. Must be usable for intended purpose.
It is in this area of relevance that much of what is passed along online falls short of being information. With the mind of providing content and winning the SEO war much gibberish is passed as information. The craze for automation and the cut and paste mentality has not being of any help either.
It is damn frustrating that one purchases an ebook online (of course sold with some compelling hard sell copy) and only discovers that it is nothing but some cut and paste, mumble-jumble piece. Many don’t even care to spell-check their work while grammatical coherence is alien to them! In the craze to package one product a day the value of what is packaged is sacrificed on the altar of monetary gain.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that ebooks or information packaging has any problem whatsoever, any content provider online only need to re-evaluate his purpose and put his prospects into consideration before packaging his information. This is the sure route that will lead to producing info-products that are classics and can stand the test of time.
Now back to our question, “Is it information that people really go online to search for? The answer is both yes and no!
People do not go online to search for information but solutions. People have problems, needs and pains that beg for solutions. It is the solutions to these various needs and pains that people seek solutions to. Information is therefore not an end but a means to an end. It is the information that can provide solution to a problem, heal a pain and offer a help for a need that is relevant information.
As one desiring to profit online as a content provider, you must provide relevant, usable and empowering information.
