Mountain View, CA is a city located just north of San Jose and 35 miles south of the San Francisco Bay and is a great place to live. It is part of Santa Clara County and is one of the major cities that make up the Silicon Valley. The city gets its name from the view of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and is also one of the points along the historic El Camino Real. The city covers a little over 12 square miles and has a population of about 72,200 people.
History
In the late 1800’s, Mountain View was covered with lush orchards and vineyards. Post World War II, the population of the city exploded. It became a popular place for agriculture throughout the 1940’s, 1950′ and most of the 1960’s. However, it is now known for its high-tech presence. Some of the more notable corporations that have a presence in Mountain View include Microsoft, AOL, LinkedIn, Adobe Systems, Google, and Nokia.
Demographics
The census for 2000 put Mountain View’s population at 70,708 people with 31,242 households and 15,902 families. The race breaks down to 55.2% White, 20.7% Asian, 18.3% Hispanic, 2.5% African American, and 3.4% other races. Over half the population is between the ages of 20 and 540, and nearly 25% are between the ages of 25 and 34. The median age is 34.6 years old. A 2006 estimate puts the median income for households at $80,599 and $98,836 for families. Males had a median income of $64,585 versus females who had $44,358.
Places of Interest
Moffett Federal Airfield: Formerly a United States Naval facility, Moffett Field is now owned and operated by the NASA Ames Research. This airfield is a United States registered historical district. Hanger One is a historical monument and is on the list of America’s most endangered places.
Castro Street: This street runs through the center of downtown Mountain View. It features a large number of Asian, Indian and Italian restaurants.
The Computer History Museum: This museum was created in 1996. Its purpose is to preserve and display artifacts of the information age. The stories and collections help us explore the computing revolution and show its importance on our lives.
San Antonio Shopping Center: This is a popular shopping mall in Mountain View.
Interesting Fact
Mountain View is the first city in the United States covered by an entirely free wireless Internet access network provided by Google. After numerous tests, the free IEEE 802.11g wireless service was deployed throughout the city on August 16 , 2006.
